Brotzeit Shangrila Plaza

I have a confession to make. The real reason behind my love and passion with beer was because of my trip to Germany way back 2004. I was part of the BMW sales agents delegate that were given the opportunity to visit BMW HQ in Munich, Germany. The experience was totally awesome, we were treated as VIPs, we dine at posh restaurants and bars, we have our own chauffeur, everything was just perfect! In Munich, they serve beer in breakfast, the alkoholfrei; lunch and dinner, as in. So, as tourist we have to abide by their standards and drank it like the Germans! So my eyes and my taste buds was opened to a whole new world of beer because they have different styles, colors and sizes of beer mugs. That is where it all started. The quest for a good beer!

So when i knew that there was a German restaurant being constructed in Shangrila Plaza, i really promised myself to dine there and drink whatever beers they will be serving.(didn't know back then)

Finally, when it opened, i was already there the first week and i am glad they carry Paulaner beer. This beer is from Munich and this beer brand has so many history to share.

According to Wiki. Paulaner is a German brewery, established in the early 17th century in Munich by the Minim friars of the Neudeck ob der Aucloister. The mendicant order and the brewery are named after Francis of Paola, the founder of the order.
Paulaner is one of the six breweries who provide beer for Oktoberfest, the German beer festival dating from 1810. This is how famous the beer brand is, we actually drank this when we were in Germany and i have been to a Paulaner Gastropub in Shanghai.
Beers are naturally good because of fresh and natural ingredients and spiritually good because its the friars who brew them! Lol.
Brotzeit Shangri-la serves their beers in tap, finally. Filipinos will get used to drinking beers in tap,we deserve better and fresher beers than bottles. But they also sell in bottles. I am just so happy that more bier gardens now serve beers in tap started from Chillis to Draft and Howzat.
Brotzeit serves 4 varieties from their tap. These are the Original Munich Lager, Weissbier,  Dunkel-Hefe Weissbier and the Original Munich Dunkel lager.
The Original Munich Lager can be compared to our SMB pale, there is bitterness. 4.9%ABV. They claim to be the best selling Munich lager in the World. Who does't want to taste that? Yummy!
The weissbier or wheat beer. This beer is really for starters, i will not understand a person who drinks this and will hate it. This is one of the easiest beer to drink because of its floral smell, sweet notes.5.5%ABV Gosh! this beer is for everyone! This beer is the No.1 Weissbier in Germany, beat that! BTW, i hate to compare to a lower brand but this beer is the same as the now famous in Manila, Hoegaarden. There i said it.
The Dunkel-Hefe Weissbier is a dark unfiltered wheat beer. Expert beer drinkers are very particular with the taste, color, texture of the beer. With this, you may taste the residues of the wort (mixed wheat, yeast, malt) and the color being Dark. Its still sweet and easy to drink. 5.3% ABV.
The Original Munich Dunkel Lager is their version of our Cerveza Negra. Dark with caramel hints of sweetness. 5%ABV. The best thing about german beers is that they follow the German Purity law where in they can not lower the standards of their ingredients that is why when you drink German beers, the flavors are very evident!

Last June 1, i celebrated my 36th birthday at Brotzeit with my family. Its really funny sometimes how old timers think, they are a stereotype. My parents were not comfortable at first because they thought that since the restaurant is a beer garden, they already assumed that it is not a family restaurant. They kept on noticing other customers with their kids same as we do. Well, at least now they know that Brotzeit is a family restaurant and drinking beer moderately is not bad at all.

My family loved the Pork knuckles and the sausages. We did not eat rice in this dinner which is very rare for a filipino family but we all ended up full because of the big servings.

It is really a must try!

I would like to thank Edward Yeung for the reservation. Thank you also to a fellow Chiang Kai alumnus Malvin for the complimentary Original Munchen Dunkel!

  1. Thanks for sharing! I stumbled upon your blog, while researching for good beers here in Manila as I plan to give dad a "beer fest" on Father's Day. :) I'm not a seasoned drinker, but I agree, getting exposed to international flavors is an eye-opener. I also went on a beer pub crawl in Munich in 2010 and was amazed with the amazing kinds of beer they had! Can't remember what other kinds of beer I tried then except for the Augustiner, but I do remember having the pork knuckles and some bratwurst! :)

  2. Your welcome. Thanks for dropping by. Hope you can follow me through blogger and FB, and twitter as well!
